youth ministry resources, games, ideas and articles

I’ve been spending time lately meeting with a youth pastor that works not to far from where I live. We’ve been talking about purpose and aligning all the “stuff” of youth ministry around a guiding purpose.

Last week she told me about a youth group activity she came up with to help reinforce the lesson from their Bible study. It was a simple idea, but I thought it was the best activity ever!

discussion, logic, student ministry and evangelism

Last night I went to Skinner's Pub with a few friends.

We talked about politics and religion - oh, and the thread count of our sheets. We had some great conversation.

One of my friends (he considers himself an unbeliever) said that one of the reasons he has a lot of trouble with Christianity is the lack of logic. He said that he finds it nearly impossible to follow many Christian's theology in a logical manner.

Technology

Just thought I’d share a few of my apps that get me by when I am in a pinch. Am I missing an important app that would be beneficial for youth workers? Let me know.

Leadership

When people say the words “young people” they are really saying “youngpeople.” One word, as a noun. Try it, out loud say young people the way you would normally say it. Why does this matter? Because when you say “youngpeople” instead of young people, you change the meaning of the words.

Youngpeople are a kind of quazi-human creature that are outside of the realm of normal expectations.

A while back, Joshua Griffin posted a ton of cool online resources. I have two outstanding favorites that I think could be useful for almost every youth pastor:

Spiritual Growth

Every other year, I take our high school group through a Sex series. I think it's something that the church must NOT remain silent about because every other influence in the world has a voice. We have remained silent for too long. Here are some thoughts right from our series.

I have been struck with I Corinthians 13 as I have taken our high school students through the sex series this year. We showed this video as we talked about moral fences.

Scripture
Scripture

Below are some great scriptures to pray over your students.

This doesn’t mean that you read them once and then use them to browbeat your students and demand they change. Theses are verses to empower your prayers.

I encourage you to take them to the Lord in prayer again and again, asking Him to work so that the love, truth, and grace of God described in these verses would come to be reflected in the lives of your teens.

Evangelism

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. – Romans 1:16

Sometimes we get to fearful of what people think about us. What they stop saying as you walk into the room, or what they say when you go out. Sometimes the reason we don’t talk about God to others is because we’re scared they will judge us. Scared they will look at us differently for believing in a God that created us.

It’s funny how everyone somehow contradicts themselves at some point.

They think the youth leadership team will do it for them.

They are afraid of rejection.

They lack the confidence...

Scripture

When I was about ten years old, I was playing golf with my friend, Chris, in his back yard.  It wasn't real golf, but ten-year-old golf using whatever we had available: a rusty 7-iron and a tennis ball.  It was a short-lived game. As Chris prepared for his first swing, I stood watching to see how this would work. He brought the club back and ...
