Partnering with Parents

I have been meeting with parents of our teenagers in our youth ministry for "Adult Sunday School Class" this summer.

Here are a few of the things that this class has discussed. If you are a youth leader or youth pastor, I encourage you to find a place to get with the parents in your ministry and really get down to the issues of partnership.

Youth Pastors Aren’t Replacement Parents

Why are youth pastors blamed for every bad thing any young person ever does in church?

We might find that some of our time is best spent helping parents be better spiritual leaders in their own homes.

Nathaniel Dame

Nathaniel Dame is the president of Called to Youth Ministry which provides the youth ministry resources, coaching, community and training youth pastors need. He is driven by a passion to promote effective youth ministry in the local church. Nathaniel lives with his beautiful wife, Christa, in Woodstock, Illinois.

Youth Ministry is Scary

Think about it. You are the only one in the entire church that “does youth ministry.”  There’s nobody to compare yourself to. There’s no “standard” to say you’re doing a good job, great job, or terrible job.

Family in Youth Ministry

Just six months into my new church, I sat down for breakfast with Logan, a junior in the youth group.

Taking care of the real you.

I was about three years into my marriage when I got a book called Total Woman. It was an older book, but it talked about how to treat your husband so he would ADORE you.

Oh No! My Son Is A Sex Symbol

I was glad that my wife and I had three boys. I always joked that I would be the dad that carried a pair of pliers in my back pocket to take care of any boys who showed even the slightest amorous hint toward a daughter of mine; or looked at her with any kind of sexual over (or under) tone.

Scratch that thought, I have unfortunately bred a fourteen year old, six-foot-three-inch, chic magnet. The ooh’s and ah’s from women when he was a lanky little seven year old red haired cutie should have been some indicator of the problems to come.

Mind you, this isn’t my opinion, that my son’s myspace.com photos are the object of multiple dozens of different girls whose comments range from the casual “You’re so cuuuuute,” to the brazen sexual proposition of loosely-moraled young girls, are obvious indicators. Oh, and he’s a musician, a guitar player, no less.

Texting, Facebook, and Technology

Recently, I did a parents training in which we talked alot about the avenues of communications that teenagers are using currently. Much of our time was spent on the topic of texting. The discussion wasn't so much, "Is texting right or wrong?" but more "how can I engage my teenager on the level of this conversation?" It was a great dialogue and discussion. There are a few things that I have observed in this realm in the last several years.
