Is Your Youth Ministry A Secret?

Think about it. Much of our work as youth pastors is done in secret. We plan many of our messages, have meetings, and do youth work in secret. We don’t mean it to be a secret but it just winds up that way. We’re not trying to hide what we do but inadvertently block the view of those who are desperately looking for who we are and what we are all about.

Telling God Stories

Everybody loves a good story. If you sit with a child to read a story to them, watch out! You may find yourself being asked to read it again and again and again. If you open your house for a movie night on Friday, you will likely have a big group of friends show up to hang out and watch a story unfold on the screen. When you visit family over the holidays, if one of the “older generation” starts to tell about times gone by, regardless of their age, many people will likely gather around to listen, ask questions, and find out more.

Loss For Words

This past Sunday (1.9.11) was our first Sunday back at GPS after a two week break for the holidays.

As as Student Pastor, I am fully aware of how important it is to kick off the new year with huge momentum by putting your best efforts out there to keep the flywheel moving.

That was my plan until the Wednesday before, I lost my voice. Like, lost it so bad that all I could muster was a whisper.

No bueno.

This was bad on about 32 different levels.

Is the Kingdom of God Fair?

In my daily Bible reading, I recently read through Jesus’ interaction with a wealthy young man and the ensuing parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 19:16-20:16). It should be difficult for Americans to read these two episodes in the gospels because they directly challenge us personally and culturally.

Self-Giving Love

To what lengths will God go to show His love?

Beyond what we can imagine.

How much will He give?

All.

Iron Man 2: Sins and How it Affects Us

I became a huge fan of Iron Man when the first one came out in 2008. It is still one of my favorite movies in my collection today.

I always find it interesting the spiritual allegories we find in movies. Sometimes it’s a stretch to name them allegories but sometimes they just jump off the screen at you.

Hear me out – IM2 is NOT a Christian movie and there’s plenty of things in the movie to remind us it’s not. However there are some strong allegories we cannot ignore.

Stop Being the Good Samaritan

In the Parable of the good samaritan, most youth workers will label themselves as the good samaritan to teens. I explain why only Jesus is the good samaritan and we are not.

Jesus Knows, Jesus Cares, Jesus Heals

When I was about ten years old, I was playing golf with my friend, Chris, in his back yard.  It wasn't real golf, but ten-year-old golf using whatever we had available: a rusty 7-iron and a tennis ball.  It was a short-lived game. As Chris prepared for his first swing, I stood watching to see how this would work. He brought the club back and ...
