Youth Ministry

Technology Overload

It might seem kind of odd to start out “Tech Week” with an article entitled “Tech Overload.” But before I dive into all the cool toys and technological wonders that we can be using in our ministry, it is important to put technology in the right context.

Why I am a Student Pastor, Part 3

It’s hard to run from God when you’re in a fish.

It’s also hard to run from God when you’re on a stretcher in the ER with your heart doing flip-flops.

Texting God

Do you text God? I do. I send him little 140-character-sized prayers throughout my day as things come up. Usually something like the following:

Guys + Girls =? Confusion?

For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” – Hebrews 13:5

I don’t know how many times I will go to a friends’ and stay up late and talk about, oh yeah, guys. Sometimes it’s to share good news about a crush or complaining about how he hasn’t done what you want him to do. Mostly, it’s the second. Complaining. And yes, I’ll admit, I do the same thing.

Try This Video: Easy, Impromptu Promo

This summer our high school ministry is having games in the park followed by free soft drinks and board games at the church. It’s a great and cheap way to build community and memories.

Yesterday I shot this impromptu video with a student to put up on Facebook so students who haven’t gone could get a feel for what happens and have an invitation from one of their own.

Knowing What To Own When Communicating With Parents

I’m bringing in 5 new students into my small group in the Fall. We’ve been spending a lot of time together this summer getting to know each other. One of the issues that’s come up is the city curfew which is 11:00 for drivers who have had their driver license for less than a year. Some of the boys are in that category and have not been making it home on time. The other night one was stopped by the police and let off with a warning.

Why I Am a Student Pastor: Part 2

I knew I was supposed to be a pastor at a very young age. Heck, I’m even named after a pastor...Decades before I would present my first formal sermon in front of those 8 students at the First Baptist Church of Pipe Creek, if you hit the “rewind” button about 30 years, you’d find me preaching my face off while standing in the big picture window of our living room. My mom said that I would preach powerfully as if every couch and coffee table in that room was about to gasp its last breath and sink into the eternal flames.

If I Were Starting Youth Ministry Today...

It is hard to believe that I have been working in Youth Ministry for almost 10 years (That is about 1/3 of my life)!...

This weekend, I was talking with one of my former helpers who is now leading the youth group in the town he has moved to. We discussed resources and practices. I gave him suggestions from the point of “If I were starting youth ministry today, what would be the most helpful resources?”

Rookie Camp Leaders: Connecting With Your Cabin

Today at summer camp, a fairly new leader approached me about not being able to connect with his guys, especially during chapel debrief times.

Here are some bullet-point words of wisdom for leaders experiencing this:

Game for the Pool: Dibble Dabble

This is a fun, low prep game that will keep the students busy for hours (with or without you).
