Evolution: The Devil’s Sneak Attack

I can see why some people believe in the theory of evolution. I’m sure it sounds like a semi-plausible explanation to people who have been taught to think that way. Some of us, however, believe that there is a Creator who is all-powerful and all-loving. Give me God over primordial soup any day.

But although the theory of evolution has holes, it may be creating a bigger problem than first meets the eye. Masses of people grow up being schooled in Darwin’s tangential brainstorming while their concept of a Creator God remains severely underdeveloped. I’m betting that some people will choose to believe evolution over creation just because it seems more solid. If someone gets their brain fried on evolution, and only hears bits and pieces of a creation story, it’s only natural that they would go with the theory that they understand the most.

The real problem comes when we try to present the gospel to someone who thinks this way. Imagine the thought process of someone who grows up truly believing that we came from monkeys, and then are told that they are a sinner and need to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ (let alone the method of delivery–i.e. a Bible-batting street preacher). The gospel would make no sense.

The gospel starts with creation, not with us being sinners. Before someone can understand that they have sinned against God, they need to understand that they have been created by God out of pure love. They need to understand that we were designed to be with God, and that when we messed that up, God came up with a Plan B. Plan B was Jesus. He loves us far too much to let a dirty little snake with no legs get in the way of our being with Him.

Brian, Can you speak more

Brian,

Can you speak more explicitly about how you see evolution as "the Devil's sneak attack"? How would you respond to Christians who have reconciled the creation texts with the idea of natural selection? Do you see this as a dangerous (even demonic) position for believers to hold?

I think that the real "devil"

I think that the real "devil" is the notion that science and religion are somehow enemies or contradictory.

There are literally millions of christians throughout the world who realize the two serve different purposes, and in most cases support one another. Science tells us that the universe is a vast, complex, ever changing place. Religion tells us that we (and our universe) were created by a vast, powerful and present God.

And your evolution argument really misses the point of creation by God. When we say that "we" are created in the "image" of God, we don't mean our fingers, our hands, our eyes. Humans are born without fingers, they have their legs blown off, they are born blind. Do these physical problems mean we are no longer divine? That we are no longer beings after the image and likeness of God? That we are ruined, no good, no longer able to attain salvation?

The notion that our physical form is what's important is ridiculous. Every human on this planet looks different (even most twins, yes). Made in the "image" of God does not mean physically, there is no way God could look like every one of us (most christians do not even think of God as having a limited physical form like ours).

"Made in the image and likeness of God" refers to the human soul. It refers to our capacity to love, to create, to feel wonder, to be curious, to do things contrary to "instinct," to have free will. These are the aspects of our creator that make Him divine and set Him apart from animals, and these are the aspects in which we mirror Him.

Maybe our frail physical forms came from evolution, maybe not. But seeing as they are not the divine part of our human person, does it really matter that much? Our souls (what truly makes us human, not "monkey-like") were directly made and fashioned by our God, in His image, so that we can be divine beings like Him, and someday rejoin Him in perfect union.

If you ask me, this whole "science vs. religion" debate is the true "Devil sneak attack." Satan seeks to divide us, to turn us against one another, to create hatred and violence and distrust through arguments and conflict. Every time we as people of faith argue with or put down science, we are creating strife that doesn't need to be there. And every time we people of science feel the need to trivialize or put down faith, we are creating more problems. In the kingdom of God, we are all meant to get along and be in harmony with each other.

As my devout christian biology teacher liked to say - "Science teaches us how God's universe works, religion & faith teach us why we should care."

I agree with what Scott said

I agree with what Scott said above. Genesis 1:24 says "Let the land produce living creatures..." If we take what is written literally, than we have to accept evolution. Science is not evil, evolution is not evil. We need to understand that God is God. He will do as he pleases. If He wants to create through natural selection, so be it. God appointed man to have the breath of life breathed into him. The only creature to have this. We interpret that as our spirit, literally a piece of the spirit of God. It is through this spirit that we communicate to Him 1 Cor 2:10-ff. So what is the real Devil's sneak attack? Getting us distracted into thinking that we need to waste time arguing with people. The more time we spend clinging to poor scientific thoughts, and explaining the reality of the difference that Christ has made in our lives, the more time we waste, and Satan giggles himself sick because we are turning off the very people that Christ has commanded us to save.
